Why a commercial gas oven won’t ignite
When a commercial gas oven won’t ignite, it’s rarely a single cause. However, in most Kent kitchens we attend, the fault falls into one of four categories: ignition system failure, gas supply issues, safety lockout, or thermocouple/thermostat problems. This guide walks through each category to help you diagnose the fault before calling an engineer.
Common causes of commercial gas oven ignition failure
1. Faulty igniter or spark electrode
The spark electrode is often the first component to fail. Furthermore, in high-use commercial kitchens, grease and carbon deposits build up on the electrode and disrupt the spark. Signs include a clicking sound with no flame, or no spark at all. In addition, a cracked electrode tip will prevent reliable ignition even when the gas supply is working correctly.
2. Gas supply issues
Before assuming an electrical fault, check the gas supply. Additionally, confirm that the isolation valve to the oven is fully open and that other gas appliances on the same circuit are working. A failed solenoid valve can block gas flow even when the control knob is turned to the ignition position. Therefore, ruling out gas supply problems early can save significant diagnostic time.
3. Thermocouple failure
The thermocouple is a safety device that holds the gas valve open once the pilot flame is lit. Consequently, if the thermocouple has failed or is positioned incorrectly relative to the pilot flame, the oven will either not light or immediately go out when you release the ignition button. This is a very common fault on older ovens that have seen heavy use.
4. Safety lockout or interlock tripped
Modern commercial gas ovens have safety interlocks that prevent ignition if the oven detects an unsafe condition. However, these can trip due to a previous fault or power surge. Specifically, if the oven has a digital control panel, look for error codes that indicate why the lockout was triggered. In many cases, a reset procedure will clear the fault once the underlying issue is resolved.
What to check before calling an engineer
There are several checks a kitchen operator can safely perform before calling for engineer attendance.
First, confirm the gas supply is on and other appliances are working. Second, check that the oven control is fully rotated to the ignition position and held for long enough — most ovens require 10–20 seconds of hold time after ignition. Third, look for any visible error codes or warning lights on the control panel. Finally, if the oven was previously working and has simply stopped, check whether there was a power cut or gas interruption that may have tripped a safety reset.
