Refrigeration Tripping the Electrics

A fridge or freezer that keeps tripping the electrics is rarely a one-off fault. It usually points to a fault current escaping to earth, a failing component drawing excess current at start-up, or a circuit that was never sized for the load. Here is how to work out what is happening before you call an engineer.

Quick answer

When refrigeration equipment trips an RCD or MCB, the cause is almost always one of a short list of issues. Work through these in order before assuming the worst.

  1. Moisture inside the compressor terminal box or a cracked cable gland letting water into the electrics.
  2. A failing compressor start relay or run capacitor drawing a current spike on start-up.
  3. Condenser fan motor windings breaking down and leaking current to earth.
  4. A blocked or iced-up condenser forcing the compressor to work harder and overheat.
  5. The circuit breaker or RCD is simply undersized or shared with too many other appliances.

If the trip happens at the exact moment the compressor kicks in, suspect the compressor or its starting components. If it happens randomly or after cleaning, suspect moisture ingress.

What to do before calling an engineer

A few safe checks can save an engineer's visit and help them diagnose the fault faster on arrival.

  • Note the exact timing. Does it trip immediately on power-up, a few minutes in, or only when the compressor cycles on?
  • Check for water. Look for pooling near the unit, a blocked drain line, or condensation dripping onto the electrics from a failed door seal.
  • Try a different circuit if safe to do so. If another appliance on the same breaker also trips, the fault may be in the wiring, not the fridge.
  • Clean the condenser coil if it is visibly clogged with dust or grease, since a blocked condenser is a common cause of compressor overload.
  • Do not keep resetting the trip. Repeated resets on a genuine fault current can damage wiring and increase fire risk.
  • Log every trip with time, date, and what the kitchen was doing at the time, such as running a dishwasher on the same circuit.

⚠️When to call immediately

Some symptoms mean stop using the unit and get an engineer out the same day, not tomorrow.

  • Burning smell, scorch marks, or visible discolouration around the plug, socket, or terminal box.
  • The trip will not reset at all, or resets and trips again within seconds.
  • Sparking, buzzing, or crackling noises from the unit or its connection point.
  • Standing water or visible condensation inside any electrical enclosure.
  • You store high-risk food and the unit has been off for more than an hour, since HACCP temperature logging requirements mean product may need to be discarded.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my fridge only trip the electrics when it is humid or has just been cleaned?

Moisture is the likely cause. Water or condensation reaching the compressor terminal box or a damaged cable creates a path to earth, which an RCD detects as a fault and trips instantly. Check door seals, drain lines, and cable glands for signs of water ingress.

Is it safe to keep resetting the breaker until the fridge stays on?

No. Repeatedly resetting a breaker that keeps tripping on a genuine fault current risks damaging the wiring further and can present a fire hazard. Leave it off and get it checked by a qualified engineer.

Could the trip be caused by the building wiring rather than the fridge?

Yes. If other appliances on the same circuit also trip, or the fridge trips a socket that has nothing to do with refrigeration, the circuit itself may be undersized or faulty. This falls under general electrical safety and should be assessed against current wiring regulations, see the HSE guidance on electrical safety for background.

What is the most common component failure that causes this?

Compressor start relays and run capacitors are the most frequent culprits, since they draw a current spike as the compressor starts. A failing condenser fan motor with breaking down windings is the second most common cause.

How much does it cost to fix a refrigeration unit that trips the electrics?

Costs vary depending on whether the fault is a simple relay or capacitor replacement, a condenser fan motor, or a wiring repair. An engineer can usually confirm the cause and give a fixed quote after an initial diagnostic visit.

Stop guessing, get it diagnosed properly

Refrigeration units that trip the electrics rarely fix themselves, and repeated resets only increase the risk of a bigger failure or a fire hazard. Advantage Catering Equipment Ltd engineers carry the test equipment and parts stock to diagnose and fix most refrigeration electrical faults on the first visit, across Folkestone and the whole of Kent.
