Combi Oven Not Generating Steam: Diagnostic Guide
A combi oven that will not build steam usually points to a water supply fault, a scaled boiler or generator, or a failed steam valve. Here is how Kent kitchen operators can narrow down the cause before booking an engineer.

If your combi oven is not generating steam, the fault is almost always in one of four places: the water supply, the boiler or steam generator, the steam valve or solenoid, or the control board sensing the fault and shutting the function down. Rational and Hobart units in particular will flag a specific error code, which is the fastest route to diagnosis.
- Check the water supply is on and the inlet filter is not blocked.
- Look for a limescale build up on the boiler element or steam generator plate.
- Check for an active fault code on the oven display.
- Listen for the steam solenoid valve clicking on when a steam cycle starts.
- Check the water softener or filter cartridge has not expired.

What to do before calling an engineer
A few checks can save an engineer visit, or at least mean the fault is fixed on the first call.
- Confirm water is reaching the oven. Check the stopcock behind the unit is fully open and there is no kink in the flexible hose.
- Note the exact error code. Rational units show codes like E-numbers on the display; write it down before you switch off, as it disappears on reset.
- Check the water filter or softener. An overdue cartridge lets hard water straight into the boiler, which scales the element fast in Kent's hard water areas.
- Run a descale cycle if the oven allows it. Many combi ovens have a built in descale programme that can clear light scale without an engineer.
- Check the drain is not blocked. Some ovens will not build steam if the boiler cannot cycle water out properly.
- Log recent service history. Knowing when the boiler was last descaled or the element replaced helps the engineer prioritise checks.

Some symptoms mean the oven should be switched off and isolated rather than left running.
- Water leaking from the base or door seal of the oven.

Why has my combi oven stopped making steam but the oven still heats?
This points away from a general electrical fault and towards the steam specific components: the boiler element, steam solenoid valve, or a water supply issue. If the fan and heating elements work normally, the fault is isolated to the steam circuit.
Can limescale really stop steam production completely?
Yes. A heavily scaled boiler element or steam generator plate insulates the heating surface from the water, so it either produces no steam or produces it very slowly. This is the most common cause we find in Kent kitchens with hard mains water and no softener in place.
Is it safe to keep using the oven in dry heat mode while steam is faulty?
Usually yes for short term use, provided no safety or overheat fault code is showing. Check with your engineer first if the oven has flagged an electrical or thermostat related error, since these can affect the whole unit.
How often should a combi oven boiler be descaled?
This depends on water hardness and usage, but most manufacturers recommend descaling every one to three months in hard water areas, alongside a planned maintenance visit at least twice a year.
Will an engineer need to order parts for a steam fault?
